In a democracy; like in Papua New Guinea, majority rules

By Reginald Renagi

The other alternative government leader and former PNG prime minister, Sir Michael Somare and what they are asking for cannot realistically be entertained at this point in time.

In spite of what has happened in the political enviroment in PNG for some two weeks, Michael Somare is still defiant; and adamant by telling media and the people of PNG that he is still the legitimate prime minister.

No matter; the general situation now is that his rein may have already being overtaken by events since Aug 2 this year when a parliamentary “Absolute Majority” move by the former opposition ousted the Somare government. For all intents and purposes, the people of PNG have spoken through their majority elected representatives in Parliament. Parliament is the supreme authority and its decisions supersedes all else.

New Parliament-elect Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill's government is now the legitimate government of PNG. In a democracy like PNG, majority rules; and the other alternative group under Somare does not have the support of parliament to be in government.
